The Morning Star occurrence is located about 775 metres west of Barkerville.

The Morning Star showing lies within the Barkerville Terrane of the Omineca Belt. The Barkerville Terrane is in thrust contact with Triassic Quesnel Terrane rocks to the west and Hadrynian to Lower Paleozoic Cariboo Terrane rocks to the east. The Barkerville Terrane in this region is underlain by the dominantly metasedimentary rocks of the Hadrynian to Lower Paleozoic Snowshoe Group. In this area, the Snowshoe Group comprises limestone, phyllite and quartzite. These rocks have been regionally metamorphosed to greenschist facies.

The showing is underlain by quartzite and limestone cut by closely-spaced quartz veins up to 1.2 metres wide. Some of these veins are well mineralized with galena and pyrite and at least two stringers with widths of 15 and 25 centimetres respectively, carry good gold values. Old reports refer to these veins as being bedded.

In 1955, the Westport property covered the Morning Star claim and was held by Williams Creek Gold Quartz Mining Company Limited, which is owned principally by the Cariboo Gold Quartz Mining Company Limited, Noranda Mines Limited, and Consolidated Quebec Gold Mining and Metals Corporation. In the 1930s, the Aladdin-Honest John and Dooley-Home Rule showings on the present Morning Star (Lot 10504) and Evening Star (Lot 10505) claims were prospected. In 1933, Britannia Mining and Smelting Co. Limited took options on many of the claims now in the Westport group but dropped the options in 1934. The Cariboo Gold Quartz Mining Company Limited acquired the Westport group in 1938, and in 1946 turned it over to Williams Creek Gold Quartz Mining Company Limited. The Williams Creek company rigourously explored the group by geological survey, stripping and diamond drilling. Approximately 4572 metres of drilling was done mostly in the vicinity of the Westport and Black Jack (093H 027) adits, and 3048 metres of bulldozer stripping was done mostly on the Morning Star claim; the company was inactive from 1947 to 1955.

In 2011, Williams Creek Gold Ltd. completed phase II of its exploration and diamond drilling program on its wholly owned group of Crown-granted mineral claims which are concentrated in the Stouts Gulch and Williams Creek drainages. A total of 4819 metres were drilled in phase II, with an overall total of 9745 metres in 42 holes for the year. The program was designed to follow up on excellent initial intercepts from the 23-hole phase I drilling in both the Stouts Gulch area and the Morning Star area (this description) farther northwest.

The majority of the high-grade intercepts in the phase II drilling are quartz veins, locally in what appear to be vein zones. In hole WCX-11-26 in the Morning Star area, an interval of 25.1 metres contains enough high-grade veins and wallrock mineralization to average 4.59 grams per tonne gold from 258.1 to 283.2 metres (Press Release – Williams Creek Gold Ltd., January 18, 2013).

The area where the north trending Sirius fault extends through the confluence of Williams Creek and Stouts Gulch is the site of some of the better intercepts, some of which are near the surface. Drillholes WCX-11-38 through WCX-11-40 were collared approximately 61 metres east of the strong intercepts encountered in phase I holes WCX-11-01 through WCX-11-06 in the area of the Westport adit (093H 027). These holes contain numerous high-grade intercepts up to 1.3 metres at 39.6 grams per tonne gold. Ground preparation caused by deformation within the zone bounded by the Sirius fault and the Barkerville fault is thought to account for the better intercepts in this area.
